Supraja was a happy mother but then isolation led to tragedy

It has been 2 years since Indian Mother, Supraja, committed suicide at their apartment in Melbourne.  At 10:40AM on 14 July 2016, Supraja found at bottom of the apartment building after climbing over the balcony while holding her son Shrihan.

They were happy couple. But Supraja had become socially isolated after the birth of their son Shrihan. She had one friend in Australia who she saw rarely after moving from India about 18 months earlier. She had quit her own job in technology to look after her two children, while Srinivas was often busy at his job near home.

There were a few signs that Supraja wasn’t coping. She wasn’t sleeping well, had stopped eating and was unhappy with her appearance. Srinivas later said that his wife appeared to be “a little bit distressed” that week.

The night before she took her own life, aged 30, and that of her baby son, two years ago on Saturday, Supraja told Srinivas that her legs and wrists were getting skinny but her waist hadn’t changed.

She also said multiple times to her husband that “you are not hugging me”. Srinivas, in pain from sciatica in his back, asked his wife to come closer and gave her a hug.

Next day she was found dead with her son after committing suicide.

If you are feeling depressed or need help there is department in Australia where you can call. If you or someone you know is in need of support, you can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.
