Police warn parents about ‘sextortion’ cases

If you have teenager son or daughter you should talk to them about this new scam and online blackmailing cases.

Overseas scammers and crime syndicates are now targeting teenagers across Australia. If you have teenager kids talk with them about online scams and safety.

Overseas crime syndicates trick teenagers into sending embarrassing pictures of themselves over social media and then blackmail them and demand money.  Senior police are seriously concerned about this new ‘sextortion cases’

These crime groups are based overseas, and they create fake profiles normally of attractive young girls and then use social media to target teenagers. They then start chatting to young boys, normally aged between 13 to 20 years. They start normal chat and then the messages very quickly become of a sexual nature and then ask them to send video of themselves doing things.

Once the blackmailer has video or photo, they threaten that to send their relatives unless victim will pay money to them. If you are under 18 years and victim of this type of scam, please contact police as soon as possible. The sooner you report it to police the better.
