Police have charged a 25-year-old man who allegedly carried out a series of brutal, random attacks on people of Asian appearance in Randwick on Thursday night.
The unprovoked attacks left several people injured, including a 70-year-old man, and police believe they were racially motivated.
It took a group of nearby workmen to restrain the man from continuing his alleged rampage.
The attacks began just before 10pm on Thursday when the man was walking along Avoca Street and allegedly punched an unidentified woman in the face, police said.
As he continued down the street he allegedly assaulted several other women in a group.
Walking on to Belmore Road, he then allegedly punched a 30-year-old man in the face, before attacking a 70-year-old man, leaving him with facial injuries after punching and kicking him.
Police said the man then crossed the road, allegedly punching a 26-year-old woman in the face before kicking her repeatedly.
A man who tried to intervene was also punched in the face multiple times, leaving him with facial injuries.
The 25-year-old was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with three counts of reckless grievous bodily harm and four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man was refused bail to appear in court on Friday.
Police are appealing for anyone who was assaulted, or who witnessed any assaults and have not yet spoken to police, to come forward.
