Be warned: it is an offence to leave your car unlocked. You could be fine upto $108 in NSW and $44 in QLD




New South Wales Police have cracking down on cars which are kept unlocked in Wollongong, south of Sydney, ABC news reported. Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said police have found 30 unlocked cars with valuable property, and are issuing residents with warnings, or knocking on doors to remind them to lock their cars. Police is issuing warning at this stage. They could issue fine too.

Very few people know this rule. As per rule Your vehicle must be secure before leaving it parked on a road, or a road-related area (which includes shopping centre car parks). A driver is considered to have left the vehicle when he or she is more than three metres from the vehicle. Unless there is somebody 16 years of age or older in the vehicle, before you leave the vehicle, you must:

switch off the engine

apply the parking brake

remove the ignition key

wind up the windows

lock the doors
