What you should do if you find money Interesting Law

What we generally do when we find money lying on the floor or on the shelf in the supermarket? Say it is $20 note in the freezer and you see no one is around. Well, most likely we take this money and keep it. We don’t know the owner of the money and we think if we will give it to the staff they may keep it as they even don’t know whose this money belongs too. Well, it is crime to keep found money.  Even if you have found it on the road it is still a crime to keep the money. You may end up in the Jail and have a criminal case against you.

Recently in the UK one of the shoppers (named Nicole) was fined $249 for keeping 20 pounds note she found from the supermarket. As per news, the girl found 20 Pounds note from the supermarket freezer. She did not know whose money was that so she kept that money.  Actually, the money was dropped by a wheelchair-bound person – who altered staff when he found, his money was missing. Staff checked CCTV and found Nicole putting that money in her wallet.

Police was called and she was taken to police station for interview. Finally she was charged for stealing money and fined 249 Pounds.

After reading this news I searched about Australian law and it is same. So in Australia if you finds money you must take enough steps to find the owner of the money. You must hand over that money to police (or staff if you finds from store). Police will try to find the owner. In some case police will give that money to you if they can not find the owner within 30 days or so.
